Habitat in the Wild

This species has been collected on the western slope of Mount Roroka Timbu as an epiphyte. A specimen was found growing on a steep slope on shallow clayey soil in 35m high undisturbed montane forest which was dominated by Agathis spp.

The Plants Description

The pseudobulbs cluster on the rhizome and are shaped fusiform. The pseudobulbs measure c4cm long and 0.4-0.6cm in diameter. The pseudobulbs are covered by 5-6 cataphylls while they are growing. The cataphylls disintegrate into persistent fibres when the pseudobulbs mature. The leaves are petiolate; the petiole measures 3.7-5.3cm long. The leaf blades are shaped oblanceolate and have subacuminate apices. The leaf blades measure 10-11.8cm long and 1.8-2.2cm wide. The blades have 5-7 distinct nerves on them. The bracts are a salmon colour.

The Inflorescence

The inflorescence is synanthous. The peduncle is suberect and measures c23.1cm long. The rachis is nodding and measures c13.8cm long. The flowers alternate distichously and are spaced 2-3mm apart. There is one non-floriferous bract at the base of the rachis.

The Flowers

The flower colour is yellow-green. The sepals contain minute scattered trichomes. The dorsal sepal is shaped linear-oblong and has an acute apex. The dorsal sepal measures 6.9-7.2mm long and 1.6-1.8mm wide. The dorsal sepal is 3-veined and has entire margins. The lateral sepals are shaped linear-oblong and have acute apices. The lateral sepals measure 7.3-8.3mm long and 1.7-1.9mm wide. The lateral sepals are 3-veined and have entire margins. The petals are shaped linear-lanceolate and have acuminate apices. The petals measure 6.5-6.8mm long and 1.1-1.2mm wide. The petals are 3-veined and have entire margins. The labellum is entire, transversely folded at its centre and elastically attached to the column. The labellum is erect and shaped linear-oblanceolate. The labellum measures 6.9-7.3mm long and 1.6-1.7mm wide. The column is erect, straight, elongated and semi-terete. The column measures 6.3-6.5mm long. The apical hood margin is 3 dentate and distinctly exceeds the anther cap. The stelidia grow from the middle of the column and are strongly incurved. The stelidia are shaped falcately lanceolate-oblong. The stelidia are bilobed one lobe is shorter and rounded, the other longer and acuminate.
