Origin in the Wild

Elevation in the Wild

1,700-2,200 metres

Habitat in the Wild

This species has been collected on Mount Nokilalaki

The Plants Description

The roots are unbranched and grow from the rhizome that is short. The pseudobulbs are clustered on the rhizome and are shaped fusiform-terete. The pseudobulbs measure 6-6.7cm long and 0.5-0.6cm in diameter. The pseudobulbs are covered by 5-6 cataphylls while they are growing. The cataphylls disintegrate into persistent fibres when the pseudobulbs mature. The leaves are petiolate; the petiole measures 4.8-8.3cm long. The leaf blades measure 17.1-23.8cm long and 2.8-3.5cm wide. The leaf blades are shaped linear-lanceolate and have obtuse apices. The leaf blades are thin textured and have 7 distinct nerves.

The Inflorescence

The inflorescence is synanthous. The peduncle is suberect and measures 18.5-20.5cm long. The rachis is nodding, possibly pendent and measures 20.7-21.2cm long. The flowers alternate distichously and are spaced 4-6mm apart. There are 3-5 non floriferous bracts at the base of the rachis. The flowers open from the proximal part of the rachis.

The Flowers

The flowers are a lemon yellow colour. The sepals and petals open widely. The dorsal sepal is shaped lanceolate and has an acuminate apex, widest towards its base. The dorsal sepal measures 7.4-8mm long and 2.1-2.4mm wide. The dorsal sepal is 3-veined and has entire margins. The lateral sepals are shaped broadly lanceolate and have acuminate apices, widest towards their base. The lateral sepals measure 7.6-8.3mm long and 2.2-2.8mm wide. The lateral sepals are 3-veined and have entire margins. The petals are shaped broadly lanceolate and have subacuminate apices, widest at their base. The petals measure 5.9-6.6mm long and 1.9-2.2mm wide. The petals are 3 veined and have entire margins. The labellum is pendent, 3-lobed, glabrous, and 3-veined, the disc is flat. The labellum measures 5.4-5.8mm long and 2-2.3mm wide. The side lobes are smaller than the mid-lobe and are shaped obliquely-oblong with rounded to nearly acute apices. The mid-lobe is shaped lanceolate and has an acuminate apex. The labellum has two keels running from the base to the middle of the labellum. The column is slightly incurved and measures 3.6-4mm long. The apical hood exceeds the anther cap and has a rounded erose-dentate apex. The stelidia grow from the middle of the column, are suberect and shaped linear-oblong.

Additional Comments

Henrik Pedersen wrote that Dendrochilum citrinum resembles Dendrochilum beccarii from Sumatra but differs by its smaller habit and longer leaves, larger bracts and longer unequally emarginate stelidia.
