The Plants Description

The pseudobulbs cluster on a short rhizome. The pseudobulbs are shaped fusiform. The pseudobulbs measure 3-4cm long and c0.3cm in diameter. The pseudobulbs are covered by c4 cataphylls while they are growing. The cataphylls soon disintegrate into persistent fibres as the pseudobulbs mature. The leaves are petiolate; the petiole measures 7.7-8.0cm long. The leaf blades are shaped linear-lanceolate and have acute apices. The leaf blades measure 22-23cm long and 1.0cm wide. The leaves have 7 distinct nerves.

The Inflorescence

The inflorescence is synanthous. The peduncle is finely setose, erect to curved and measures 20.3-22.7cm long. The rachis is quadrangular in cross section, pendent and measures 10-18.5cm long. The flowers alternate distichously and are spaced 2.0mm apart; the rachis twists to form a cylindrical spiral. There are 3-4 appressed non-floriferous bracts at the base of the rachis.

The Flowers

The flower colour is yellowish green (Pedersen 2004). The sepals and petals spread widely. The dorsal sepal is shaped lanceolate-oblong and has an acuminate apex. The dorsal sepal measures 3.7-4.1mm long and 1.0-1.2mm wide. The dorsal sepal is three veined and has entire margins. The lateral sepals are obliquely, lanceolate-oblong and have acuminate apices. The lateral sepals measure 3.8-4.2mm long and 1.3-1.4mm wide. The lateral sepals are three veined and have entire margins. The petals are shaped lanceolate-oblong and have acuminate apices. The petals measure 3.7-4.0mm long and 1.2-1.3mm wide. The petals are three veined and have entire margins. The labellum is porrect, slightly concave and indistinctly three veined. The labellum is shaped hastate with an acute apex. The labellum measures 2.1-2.3mm long and 1.8-1.9mm wide. The labellum has entire margins. There are two longitudinal lamellae that end in a conical shaped callus. The calli are located half way along the labellum. The column is straight and measures c1.0mm long. The apical hood is prolonged into a rounded apex with an entire margin. The apical hood exceeds the anther cap. There is no column foot or stelidia.

Other Information

Pedersen wrote (2004) that this species differs from Dendrochilum tenuissimum by the rounded bracts, much larger flowers and lanceolate-oblong shaped sepals and petals.
