Habitat in the Wild

This species has been found in Luzon’s Camarines Sur Province on Mount Botianay and Mount Madooy. A collection has been made on Mindanao in Agusan del Norte Province on Mount Hilonghilong.

The Plants Description

The pseudobulbs cluster on a short rhizome. The pseudobulbs are shaped ellipsoid to fusiform. The pseudobulbs measure 0.7-1.1cm long and 0.2-0.6cm in diameter. The pseudobulbs are covered by 3-4 cataphylls while they are growing. The cataphylls soon disintegrate into persistent fibres as the pseudobulbs mature. The leaves are petiolate; the petiole measures 0.2-2.2cm long. The leaf blades are shaped lanceolate and have acute to obtuse apices. The leaf blades measure 1.9-7.6cm long and 0.4-1.3cm wide. The leaves have 3-7 distinct nerves and are thin textured.

The Inflorescence

The inflorescence is synanthous. The peduncle is suberect to curved and measures 3.8-5.7cm long. The rachis is suberect to nodding and measures 1.4-2.1cm long. The flowers alternate distichously and are spaced c1.0mm apart; the rachis twists to form a spiral. There are four appressed non-floriferous bracts at the base of the rachis. The flowers open from the proximal section of the rachis.

The Flowers

Henrik Pedersen wrote that the flowers are yellow, pink or red and the flowers number between 10 and 15 on an inflorescence (Pedersen 1997). The sepals and petals spread widely and sometimes have a few trichomes basally and a few ocelli at their apices. The dorsal sepal is shaped oblong and has a subacute to obtuse apex. The dorsal sepal measures 2.6-2.9mm long and 1.1-1.5mm wide. The dorsal sepal is 1-3 veined and has an entire margin. The lateral sepals are recurved, shaped obliquely elliptic to ovate and have acute apices. The lateral sepals measure 2.4-2.6mm long and 1.3-1.5mm wide. The lateral sepals are 1-3 veined and have entire margins. The petals are recurved, shaped elliptic to narrowly elliptic-oblong and have obtuse apices. The petals measure 2.2-2.6mm long and 0.9-1.3mm wide. The petals are 1-3 veined and have entire margins. The labellum is porrect, concave and entire. The labellum measures 2.2-2.7mm long and 2.2-2.7mm wide. The labellum is three veined and has an entire margin, the lateral margins are incurved. There are no ornaments on the labellum. The column is suberect, slightly incurved and measures 1.4-1.6mm long. The column apex is smooth and distally prolonged into a truncate and entire apex. The stelidia appear from the top of the column and are equal to or shorter than the column apex. The stelidia are shaped obliquely triangular-oblong and have rounded to obtuse apices

Other Information

L.O.Williams wrote that this species had no near relatives. Henrik Pedersen agreed (1997) and said that it is most probably allied to the Dendrochilum apoense group but differs by its incurved column and concave labellum.
