Accepted name: Dendrochilum plocoglottoides H.A.Pedersen, Nordic J. Bot. 15: 387 (1995 publ. 1996)

Subgenus – Platyclinis. Section – Replicata.

Origin in the Wild

Elevation in the Wild

1,800-2,000 metres

Habitat in the Wild

This species was collected on Mount Burney in the Ilocos Norte Province on Luzon. The type specimen was found growing in mossy forest.

The Plants Description

The pseudobulbs cluster along a short rhizome, the pseudobulbs are shaped fusiform to obpyriform. The pseudobulbs measure 1.9-2.8cm long and 0.4-0.5mm in diameter. The pseudobulbs are covered by 4-5 cataphylls while they are growing. The cataphylls disintegrate into persistent fibres as the pseudobulbs mature.  The leaves are petiolate; the petiole measures 4.6-14.1cm long. The leaf blades are dorsiventrally complanate, lanceolate and have subacuminate apices. The leaf blades measure 12.6-16.6cm long and 2.5-3.0cm wide. The leaves are thin textured and have five distinct nerves.

Flowering Season

The type specimen was collected during December

The Inflorescence

The inflorescence is synanthous. The peduncle is suberect to curved and measures 15.5-21cm long. The rachis is probably pendent and measures 8.8-11.9cm long. The flowers alternate distichously and are spaced 3.0-5.0mm apart; the rachis twists to form a cylindrical spiral. There is one non-floriferous bract on the rachis.

The Flowers

The flowers spread widely and contain a few scattered ocelli at their apices. The dorsal sepal is shaped obovate-elliptic and has an obtuse to emarginate apex. The dorsal sepal measures 5.5-6.5mm long and 2.6-3.4mm wide. The dorsal sepal has a few minute trichomes basally, is three veined and has an entire margin. The lateral sepals are shaped oblong, widened distally, and have obtuse apices. The lateral sepals measure 6.2-6.4mm long and 2.7-3.0mm wide. The lateral sepals have a few minute trichomes basally, are three veined and have entire margins. The petals are shaped lanceolate and have obtuse to subacute apices. The petals measure 4.0-4.5mm long and 1.4-1.5mm wide. The petals are one veined and have entire margins. The labellum is pendent, elastically attached to the column, rigidly replicate and 3-lobed. The labellum measures c3.7mm long and c4.0mm wide. The labellum is three veined and has entire margins. The hypochile is elastically appressed against the column and concave. The opening is partly covered by two membranes that run from the base of the column to the base of the epichile. The epichile is shaped reniform and has an obtuse to rounded apex. The side lobes are situated between the hypochile and epichile, they are shaped oblong and have obtuse apices. The column is erect, slightly incurved and measures 2.5-2.8mm long. The apical hood is prolonged into a broad, rounded wing with an entire margin. There is no column foot or stelidia.

I do not think this species is in cultivation

Additional Comments

This species is distinguishable from all other Dendrochilum by its replicate labellum and absent stelidia. Henrik Pedersen wrote that this species has no close relatives and the morphology and labellum orientation is unique amongst the genus.

As of September 2008 this species is only known by the type specimen.
