Habitat in the Wild

The type species was collected at Bukit Batu Patam, Ulu Ingei in the Belait and is the only Dendrochilum endemic to Brunei. Nothing else is known of its habitat and I could not find any information about further locations.

The habitat is recorded as dipterocarp forest in valley bottoms, ridge tops and slopes. The plant has been found on branches and on a fallen tree.

The Plants Description

The rhizome is long and creeping and can branch; with pseudobulbs spaced 5-6cm apart. At species level the pseudobulbs grow to 4cm long and are wider in their middle than at their ends. The pseudobulb colour at species level can vary from green, yellowish-green yellow or reddish-brown. The leaves at species level range in shape and can be lanceolate, linear-lanceolate, narrowly elliptic, oblong-elliptic and have acute apices.

The Inflorescence

The inflorescence is usually arching to pendent. The peduncle is virtually non-existent and measures less than 1cm long. The inflorescence is heteranthus and emerges from the base of a pseudobulb.

The Flowers

The flowers are white, the column and base of the labellum is pale green or yellow. The sepals are stained green basally and the petals are stained white basally. The labellum is lime-green and the column yellow-green. The dorsal sepal measures 4.2-4.4mm long and 1.5mm wide. The lateral sepals measure 4mm long and 1.5mm wide. The petals measure 3.5mm long and 1.1mm wide. The labellum is entire and porrect. The labellum is shaped oblong or narrowly ovate-oblong. The labellum is distinctly papillose. There are three keels; the two lateral keels terminate at the centre of the labellum; the median keel is much shorter. The column is curved, minutely papillose and has a bidentate apical hood. The column measures 1.6mm. The stelidia emerge from the middle of the column and do not reach the column apex.

Additional Comments

This varieties of Dendrochilum pallidiflavens can be distinguished from each other by the keels. Var oblongum has an oblong or ovate oblong shaped labellum and three keels. Var brevilabratum has 3 keels.

Dendrochilum pallidiflavens var. brevilabratum also differs from var. pallidiflavens and var. oblongum by its stelidia that are equal to or exceed the column apex and longer sepals.

The epithet refers to the short labellum.
