Habitat in the Wild

This species has been collected from near Padang in West Sumatra. Schlechter wrote that Dendrochilum micholitzianum var. longispicatum was collected on trees in the vicinity of Padang Pandjang in West Sumatra.

The Plants Description

The pseudobulbs are pyramid shaped and measure c2.5cm long and c7.5mm in diameter. The leaves are petiolate; the petiole measures c3.5cm long. The leaf blades are shaped lanceolate and have acute apices. Schlechter described var. longispicatum as having a sharp point. The leaf blades measure c9cm long and c2.5cm wide.

The Inflorescence

The inflorescence measures 15cm long in total. I could find no record of the lengths of the rachis and peduncle. I could not find any information about what stage of the new growth the inflorescence appears and from which section of the rachis the flowers open from. The bracts are the same length as the ovary.

The Flowers

Approximately 20 flowers grow on an inflorescence. The flowers are yellowish-green. The sepals are shaped ovate-oblong and measure c3mm long. The petals are shaped oblong and have acute apices, the petals are 1-veined. The labellum is said to be shaped like a fiddle and is 3-lobed. The side lobes are small and have acute apices. The mid-lobe is an oblong shape and has an acute apex. There are 3 keels; the 2 lateral keels end at the centre of the epichile, the median keel is lower and shorter. The column is small. The apical hood has a dentate margin, those in the centre longer than the outer ones. The stelidia grow from the base of the column, the stelidia are shaped triangular with acute apices.

Flowering Season

Kraenzl’s var. micholitzianum was collected in flower during November. Schlechter wrote that var. longispicatum was in flower during February in cultivation.

I do not think this species is in cultivation

Similar Species

Dendrochilum longifolium

Other Information

Schlechter wrote that this species is similar to Dendrochilum longifolium but differs by its shorter leaves.

Information about this species is scarce, to date I have not been able to find out anything about the variety, Dendrochilum micholitzianum var. longispicatum.
