Origin in the Wild

Elevation in the Wild

2450 metres

Habitat in the Wild

The holotype was collected from the Western slope of Mount Roroka Timbu. A further collection was made on the summit of Mount Roroka. On Mount Roroka Timbu this species is only known from the summit area where it grows as an epiphyte in c6 meter high elfin forest dominated by Ericaceae and Myrtaceae.

The Plants Description

The pseudobulbs cluster along the rhizome and are shaped ellipsoid to fusiform. The pseudobulbs measure 0.8-1.7cm long and 0.3-0.4cm in diameter. The pseudobulbs are covered by 3-4 cataphylls while they are growing. The cataphylls disintegrate into persistent fibres when the pseudobulbs mature. The leaf is petiolate, the petiole measures 0.8-1.7cm long. The leaf blades measures 2.1-5.5cm long and 0.4-1cm wide. The leaf blades are shaped narrowly lanceolate and have acute apices. The leaves have 3 distinct nerves.

The Inflorescence

The inflorescence is synanthous. The peduncle is erect to curved and measures 7.2-10cm long. The rachis is nodding and measures 4.1-11.2cm long. The flowers alternate distichously and are spaced 3-6mm apart. The flowers open from the proximal section of the rachis.

The Flowers

The flowers are ochre-yellow; the labellum is cream and has a dull orange blotch. The flowers spread widely. The dorsal sepal is shaped lanceolate and has an acute apex. The dorsal sepal measures 6.7-7.2mm long and 2-2.4mm wide. The dorsal sepal has an entire margin and is three veined. The lateral sepals are shaped obliquely linear to lanceolate and have acute apices. The lateral sepals measure 6.5-7.9mm long and 1.8-2.4mm wide. The lateral sepals have entire margins and are three veined. The petals are shaped lanceolate slightly oblique and have acute apices. The petals measure 5.5-6.5mm long 1.7-2.1mm wide. The petals have entire margins and are veined. The labellum is firmly attached to the column, entire and is somewhat porrect. The labellum measures 6.2-6.6mm long and 3.8-5.2mm wide. The labellum is shaped obovate and has a rounded, sometimes apiculate apex. The labellum has an entire but irregular margin, is glabrous and 3-veined.  There are 2 keels basally on the lateral veins. The column is suberect, straight and measures 2.1-2.5mm long. The apical wing/hood is wing like and prolonged into a flabellate, truncate apex that exceeds the anther cap. A column foot and stelidia are absent.

Other Information

Henrik Pedersen wrote that this species is related to Dendrochilum monodii from Sulawesi but differs from its longer pedicels, the two keels and the absent stelidia on the column.
