Origin in the Wild

Elevation in the Wild

1,450 - 2,500 metres

Habitat in the Wild

Mount Talang in West Sumatra.

The Plants Description

The pendent rhizome can grow to 80cm long with internodes of 3.5cm long. The pseudobulbs are spaced 8.5cm apart and are shaped almost terete; the pseudobulbs are adpressed against the rhizome. The pseudobulbs measure 1.1-1.7cm long. The leaves are petiolate; the petiole measures 1.4cm long. The leaves are ovate-oblong with gradual long-acuminate apices. The leaf measures 10.0-11.0cm long and 3.6-3.8cm wide, leaves on smaller side branches are smaller.  The leaves are thin textured, coriaceous and have 7 distinct nerves along their length.

The Inflorescence

The inflorescence is synanthous, and appears before the leaf has started developing. The peduncle measures 3.5-4.5cm long and is nodding. The rachis is quadrangular in cross section, measures 11cm long. The flowers are spaced 3mm apart.

The Flowers

The flower is light green with brown on its labellum. The flowers open widely and measure 7.3mm across. The dorsal sepal is shaped lanceolate with an acuminate apex. The dorsal sepal measures 5.0mm long and 1.5mm wide. The dorsal sepal is three veined and has entire margins. The lateral sepals are shaped obliquely lanceolate, subfalcate and are narrowed to acute apices. The lateral sepals measure 5.0mm long and 1.6mm wide. The lateral sepals are three veined and have entire margins. The petals are shaped obliquely oblong-rhomboid and have acute apices. The petals measure 4.25mm long and 1.75mm wide. The petals are three veined and have erose margins. The labellum is three veined, 3-lobed and recurved apically. The labellum is ventricose above its base. The labellum measures 3.3mm long. The side lobes are basal, erect, shaped broadly triangular with obtuse apices. The mid-lobe is concave, minutely papillose, and shaped rhomboid with a shortly acuminate apex. The mid-lobe measures 2.3mm long and 2mm wide. There are 2 keels that join basally by a transverse ridge. The column is short, has a small apical hood that is shaped almost quadrangular with a truncate apex. The apical hood margins are irregularly dentate. The stelidia grow from the middle of the column, are shaped lanceolate and exceed the apical hood.

Other Information

J.J. Smith wrote that this species was similar to Dendrochilum edentulum and Dendrochilum incurvibrachium but differs from the latter by its semi-terete pseudobulbs that are adpressed against the rhizome, shorter and inflorescences, broader and shorter hypochile. J Smith also compared this species to Dendrochilum elegans but D. elegans has a shorter peduncle, the labellum is broader basally and linear shaped stelidia.

The type was collected in a coffee plantation.
